The Megaminx is a dodecahedron with twelve pentagonal faces. It was first sold in the early 1980s as the Hungarian Supernova, and the puzzle maker Uwe Mèffert then patented it and made it popular. It looks intimidating and hides about 1.01×1068 positions, a number with 69 digits. Don't let that scare you: every face turns exactly like a 3x3 face, there are just more of them.

The method below follows the same road as the Ruwix Megaminx guide, adapted to this page's face names, and every algorithm on this page has been machine-checked against the simulator. The diagrams are drawn by the same engine that turns the puzzle.

How to Read the Moves

Twelve faces need twelve names. The six you look at most: U up, F front, R right, L left, BR and BL behind. The six on the far side mirror them: D down, B back, DR and DL below the front, DBR and DBL below the back.

A letter turns that face one fifth of a circle clockwise (72°), an apostrophe (') counterclockwise, and a 2 doubles the turn. Careful: a megaminx face has five stops, so U2 and U2' are different moves. Two steps one way is not the same as two steps the other way.

The timer's scrambles use the official competition notation: R++ and D++ grab everything except one far layer and give it two steps, -- turns the other way, and each line ends with a plain U move. The simulator plays these too.

The Centers Never Move

The best news on the whole page: the twelve center pentagons never move relative to each other. An ordinary face turn cannot shift a center at all, so the color scheme is printed on the puzzle and every piece has exactly one home. When in doubt, trust the centers. (The competition R++ and D++ moves turn almost the whole puzzle at once, so they do re-aim it in your hands, but they carry the scheme around with them and never break it.)

The standard scheme pairs every strong color with a pale partner on the opposite side: white-gray, red-orange, blue-sky, green-lime, yellow-cream, purple-pink. Around the white face sit red, blue, yellow, purple and green.

A megaminx has 50 moving pieces: 20 corners with three stickers and 30 edges with two. Corners only ever sit in corner slots and edges in edge slots, just like the 3x3, only more.

The White Star

Hold white on top. Put the five white edges around the white center so that each edge's other sticker matches the center below it. Put the white-red edge on the red face, white-blue on the blue, and so on.

This is the megaminx's version of the white cross, and it is solved the same way: no algorithms, just look at where a piece is and walk it home. With five targets instead of four it takes a little longer, nothing more.

The First Layer

Now the five white corners. Find a white corner and turn it under the slot where its three colors meet - the corner directly below, one layer down. Then repeat these four moves until it clicks into place with white on top:

One, three or five rounds seats it, depending which way the corner is facing; the rest of the white layer is put back exactly as it was every time. It is the 3x3's R' D' R D trick, with DR standing in for the face under the puzzle's right side.

When the star and the corners are done you have a solid white face with a matching colored rim. That is the first layer, one of many. From here the puzzle is climbed like a ladder.

Climb the Middle

Turn the puzzle over: white face down, gray on top. Everything in between is fed in from the gray layer, and a single grip shows you every slot you will ever fill. Put any face of the gray ring in front of you. Counting from the bottom up, the middle is five rounds:

  • 1 the edge tucked under the front face
  • 2 the bottom corner of the front face
  • 3 the two lower edges
  • 4 the two middle corners
  • 5 the two upper edges

Finish a round the whole way round the puzzle before starting the next one. Every sequence below protects everything underneath it and stirs everything above, so the order is what keeps your work safe. In every round the piece you need waits in the gray layer: turn the top until it sits exactly where the picture shows, then run the sequence.

If the piece you want is already jammed into one of these slots the wrong way round, run that slot's own sequence once with anything at all on top. The stuck piece pops back up into the gray layer and you can put it in properly.

Round 1: the edge under the front face

This edge carries the two colors of the front face's lower-left and lower-right neighbors, so it never shows the front color at all. Bring it to the top of the front face and read the sticker pointing up:

Round 2: the bottom corner

The corner at the very bottom of the front face is the easiest piece on the puzzle: a single turn of the front face carries it down from the gray layer. Which turn depends on the sticker pointing up.

Round 3: the two lower edges

Turn the top until the waiting edge shows the front color on its front sticker. The sticker pointing up then names the slot it wants:

Sometimes the edge shows the front color pointing up instead, and no amount of turning the top will fix that. Park it at the top of the face to the front's upper left and run the almost identical sequence:

Round 4: the two middle corners

These go in with the same trick as step 2. Park the corner in the gray layer directly above its slot. For the middle-right slot that is the front face's top-right corner. Repeat four moves until it clicks in. One, three or five rounds does it, whichever way the corner is facing.

Round 5: the two upper edges

The last round of the middle, sitting directly under the gray layer. Turn the top until the edge shows the front color on its front sticker, and the up sticker again names its slot:

If the edge shows the front color pointing up instead, no turn of the top will fix it. Park it at the top of the other face of its slot, the upper-right neighbor, so that neighbor's color faces you. Then run the same two halves the other way round:

When the last upper edge drops in, only the gray layer is left, and that is a slow-motion 3x3 last layer.

The Gray Star

Only the top layer is left. First make the gray star: all five top edges showing gray upward. Where the star is missing, two of its edges show gray to the side instead:

Every run of either sequence flips exactly two star edges the right way up. Turn the gray face between runs to stand the sideways pair as the picture shows, run the matching sequence, and repeat. Two or three visits are usually enough.

The corners get stirred while you do this. Let them. They are the last two steps.

Place the Star Edges

The star shows gray on top, but the edges may still sit between the wrong side colors. This sequence cycles three of them one step clockwise - front to front-left, front-left to back-left, back-left to front:

Its mirror-mate cycles the same three edges back:

Find an edge that already matches its side colors, keep it out of the cycling trio, and repeat until all five sit right. As on the 3x3, that takes at most a few rounds. The corners take a step around with every run; still not their turn.

Place the Corners

Now the top corners go home, to the spot whose three side colors match theirs, twisted or not. This pair of sequences is the cleanest on the page: each cycles three corners and moves nothing else at all. On the left side of the top, clockwise:

Turn the gray face to line the trio up with the picture, run, and check again. Because the edges never move, nothing you finished can break here.

Turn the Corners Upright

Every piece is home; some corners just face the wrong way. Hold a twisted corner at the top front right and repeat four moves that use DR, the face tucked directly under the puzzle's right side:

Two rounds turn the corner one third of the way; run them again if it needs the other third. Then turn only the gray face to bring the next twisted corner to the front right and repeat. On a 3x3 this trick is called R' D' R D. Here the "down" face by the corner is named DR.

Yes, the layers under the corner get scratched up while you do this. Keep going: the scratch repairs itself by the time the last corner turns upright, every single time. It is the same self-healing as on the 3x3.

Turn the gray face into line, and the Megaminx is done.

What Next?

Congratulations, you can solve a twelve-sided puzzle with 1068 positions. That is genuinely rare company.

The Megaminx is the twelve-sided cousin of the Rubik's Cube. Every face of the dodecahedron turns like a cube face, with five stops instead of four.


The Megaminx arrived in the early 1980s, at the height of the cube craze. It came out first as the Hungarian Supernova, then under the name it kept. The puzzle maker Uwe Mèffert patented and sold it. 🎲 It has 50 moving pieces: 20 corners and 30 edges around twelve fixed centers. That gives about 1.01×1068 reachable positions. For scale, that is a trillion trillion trillion trillion times more than the 3x3's 43 quintillion.

And yet it is not a hard puzzle. The twelve centers never move, so the color scheme is printed on the puzzle itself. Corners stay corners and edges stay edges. Every trick you know from the 3x3 carries over almost unchanged. Want just the corners? The Kilominx is the same dodecahedron with the edges removed.

Stuck? The solver walks you home

Copy the colors of your scrambled Megaminx onto the flat net in the solver and press Solve. You can paint with the twelve-color palette, use the turn buttons, or type a scramble. The program solves the puzzle the way the tutorial does: white star, first layer, the three middle bands, then the gray top. It uses the very same verified sequences the tutorial teaches. Solutions usually run to 250-330 moves. Step through them one by one, or let them play slowly enough to follow on the real puzzle. The search runs in a background thread with a ticking clock and a Cancel button. If a sticker pattern is impossible, the solver names exactly what looks wrong.
