Kilominx Solver

The Kilominx - sold by Meffert’s as the Flowerminx - is the corners-only little brother of the Megaminx: the same twelve-sided shape, but each face is just five corner stickers meeting at a point. Twenty corners, and nothing else. It still hides 2.36×1025 positions, yet the solve is far shorter than the Megaminx’s.

The method below follows the same road as the Ruwix Kilominx guide, adapted to this page’s face names, and every sequence has been machine-checked against the simulator - the diagrams are drawn by the same engine that turns the puzzle.

How to Read the Moves

A dodecahedron has twelve faces, so the moves need twelve letters. Six of them point your way: U up, F front, R right, L left, BR and BL curving around the back. The other six live on the far side of the puzzle: D down, B back, DR and DL below the front, DBR and DBL below the back.

A bare letter spins that face one fifth of a turn clockwise (72°). Add an apostrophe (’) and it goes the other way; add a 2 and it goes twice as far. Careful: a face has five stops, so U2 and U2' are different moves - two steps one way is not the same as two steps the other.

The timer’s scrambles use the Megaminx competition notation: R++ and D++ take hold of everything except one far layer and move it two steps, -- sends it back again, and a plain U closes off each line. The simulator speaks the same notation.

There Are No Centers at All

On the Megaminx the twelve fixed centers tell you where every color lives. The Kilominx has no centers and no edges - nothing is anchored anywhere. That sounds harder, but it is actually a gift: nothing can be “in the wrong spot relative to the centers”, because there are no centers to disagree with.

Your reference is the corners you have already placed. Two neighboring corners meeting on a face must show the same color on that face - that one rule replaces the centers everywhere below.

A kilominx has exactly 20 corners with three stickers each, in three rings of five between the white bottom and the gray top - and this page’s five steps eat them in exactly that order.

The White Layer

Pick white. Solve the first white corner anywhere, then build the other four around it, one by one: each new corner’s side colors must match the corners already placed where they meet on a face.

To insert a corner, turn it directly under the empty slot - one layer down - and repeat these four moves until it clicks in place with white on top:

One, three or five rounds seats it, whichever way the corner is facing, and the corners already placed come back untouched every time. On a 3x3 this trick is called R′ D′ R D; here the “down” face by the corner is named DR.

The Lower Middle Corners

Turn the puzzle over: white face down, gray on top. Five corners form a ring just above the white layer - each one is the bottom corner of one face. Its home is the notch between two solved white corners, so its two lower colors are decided by them.

Every corner you need is waiting in the gray top layer. Face the slot you want to fill and look at which of the corner’s colors points straight up, then park the corner with a turn of the top and drop it in:

Park it at the front face’s top right with the lower-right color pointing up, and run:

If the corner you need is jammed in a slot the wrong way round, run that slot’s own turn once with anything on top - it pops back into the gray layer and you can place it properly.

The Upper Middle Corners

The last ring before the top: five corners sitting directly under the gray layer’s gaps. Same story as step 1, in the new grip: park the waiting corner in the gray layer directly above its slot and repeat four moves until it clicks:

That is for a slot on the right side of the face you’re looking at. For a slot on the left side, use the mirror:

One, three or five rounds, depending which way the corner faces. Everything below survives - checked by machine.

Same rescue as in step 2: if the corner you need is already jammed in one of these slots the wrong way round, run that slot’s four moves once with anything at all waiting above - the stuck corner pops back into the gray layer, ready to be placed properly.

Place the Top Corners

Only the five gray corners are left. First send each one home - to the spot whose three side colors match its stickers, twisted or not. This pair of sequences cycles three corners and moves nothing else at all. On the left side of the top, clockwise:

Turn the gray face to line the trio up with the picture, run, turn the top back, and check again. Two or three visits are always enough.

Turn the Corners Upright

Every piece is home; some corners just face the wrong way. Hold a twisted corner at the top front right and run the four moves from step 1 - twice per third of a turn:

Two rounds turn the corner one third of the way; run two more if it needs the other third. Then turn only the gray face to bring the next twisted corner to the front right and repeat. The layers below get scratched up while you work - keep going: the scratch repairs itself by the time the last corner turns upright, every single time.

Turn the gray face into line, and the Kilominx is done.

The Kilominx is the corners-only cousin of the Megaminx - the same twelve-sided dodecahedron, stripped down to its twenty corners, the way the 2x2 strips down the 3x3.


The idea of the Kilominx - also sold as the Flowerminx - dates back to the early 1980s, but the modern speedcube version arrived in 2016, when ShengShou put it into mass production. 🎲 Take a Megaminx and remove the centers and the edges: what is left are 20 corner pieces, five on every face meeting at the face's center point, 60 stickers in all. It has exactly 23,563,902,142,421,896,679,424,000 positions - about 2.36×1025, a 26-digit number - while the full Megaminx has roughly 1043 times more.

One thing makes it feel very different from its big brother: there are no fixed centers. Nothing anchors any color anywhere - the whole color scheme travels with the corners, so the puzzle itself decides where white ends up. It is a corner puzzle through and through: every piece is the same kind, and every face turns in five stops of 72 degrees.

Stuck? The solver walks you home

Hold your mixed-up Kilominx next to the flat net in the solver and copy it across. Pick a color from the palette and click the stickers, or turn the faces with the buttons, or type an algorithm in, then press Solve. It takes the same road the tutorial below does - white layer, the two middle rings, gray top - and no answer reaches the screen until the program has checked it against the puzzle itself. Expect 75-120 moves. Step through them one at a time, or slow the playback down until you can keep up on the puzzle in your hands. Paint something a real Kilominx could never do and it will tell you which piece is wrong: a corner twisted in place, two corners swapped, or a color used the wrong number of times.

Race the clock

⏱️ Lean on the space bar until the clock goes green, let go, and it starts; hit it again to stop. On a phone, hold the clock face instead. Each attempt arrives with a new scramble written the Megaminx way: seven lines of R++, R--, D++ and D-- that swing most of the puzzle at once, each one signed off with a U or U'. Nobody holds a Kilominx world record, because it is not a WCA event, so the only time worth beating is the one you set last week.

The Kilominx is not a WCA event, so it has no official world records. The Megaminx record as recorded by the WCA, checked August 2026 - the live list lives at worldcubeassociation.org.
