The 5x5 is known as the Professor's Cube, and it works like the classic cube, with fixed centers, split edges and a single parity case.
The 5x5 is the biggest cube on OnlineCube.com, though the twelve-sided Megaminx holds even more. 🎲 It has 92 moving pieces around 6 fixed centers and about 2.83×1074 possible positions - a number with 75 digits. None of which matters, because you never face all of it at once: two preparation steps collapse the whole thing into a 3x3, and that is a puzzle you have already beaten.
Spin the cube in the simulator
The simulator at the top of the page is a real cube, not a picture of one. Take hold of any sticker and pull: the layer under your finger comes with you, and once you are a third of the way round it clicks home by itself. Which layer you get depends on where you grabbed, so the 5x5's inner and middle slices are yours as well - just start nearer the middle. Drag beside the cube to orbit it, Scramble to mix it, full screen for the whole window. There is nothing here you can break.
Stuck? The solver shows a way out
Paint the colors of your real cube onto the net in the solver and press Solve. It works the way you are about to: centers, then edge triples, then the 3x3 finish, dropping in the wing parity fix if the cube asks for one. Expect 260-345 moves - a 5x5 is simply long - and step through them at whatever pace suits you. Paint something no real cube could show and it names the piece that is wrong instead of just refusing.
Race the clock
⏱️ Hold the space bar until the clock turns green, release, and the timer runs; press again to stop it. On a phone the clock itself is the button. Every solve arrives with its own 60-move scramble, and the running figures are the ones competitions quote - your best, your mean, and your averages of 5 and 12. It all stays in your browser, so a reload does not cost you the session.
Learn the whole solution in four steps
🎓 The tutorial below is reduction in four steps: six centers, twelve edges joined into triples, the wing parity if it turns up, then an ordinary 3x3 solve. If the 4x4 is already familiar this is an afternoon's work; straight from the classic cube, give it a weekend.
What makes the 5x5 different from the 3x3?
- The six middle centers are fixed - they give the color scheme away for free.
- Every face needs a 3x3 center block built from two kinds of center pieces.
- Every edge is split into a midge and two wings that must be joined into triples.
- Exactly one parity exists - two flipped wings on the last edge - and the 3x3 finish can never produce OLL or PLL parity.
- The corners work exactly as on the 3x3 - no new tricks there.
